Reliable Broadband Low-Latency Communications

Shivendra Panwar · Fraida Fund · Pei Liu

Wireless access rates have caught up with wireline rates, and for most applications, including mobile ones, bandwidth is no longer the main constraint. The next driver of advances in networking is likely to be reliable, low-latency connectivity rather than bandwidth alone.

Applications such as extended reality (augmented, virtual and mixed reality), wirelessly controlled robots, and haptic communications need latencies from tens of milliseconds down to below a millisecond. Carefully engineered wired networks in controlled indoor settings can meet these requirements, but delivering them over cellular networks remains an open challenge. This project addresses that challenge: providing reliable broadband low-latency communications over cellular networks.
